When Is The Deadline To Pay Back Rent In Oregon?
Since March 2020, the COVID-19 Pandemic has radically changed the rental market in Oregon because many tenants across the state were able to utilize Federal and Statewide eviction moratoriums to avoid paying rent from April 2020 through June 2021.
Now that the eviction moratoriums are officially ended, back rent is due, but the big question is when?
In this article, we will answer this question and provide you with insight into when tenants are expected to pay behind rent in Oregon.
Back Rent Is Due by February 28, 2022
If you’re a landlord in Oregon or a tenant who owes rent, the deadline to pay rent in Oregon is February 28th, 2022.
That’s right, there are just over 3 months left for tenants to catch up and pay rent that they incurred during the COVID-19 eviction moratorium.
Tenants who don’t pay the back rent by February 28th can be evicted by March 1st, 2022.
Other Important Changes:
Landlords with renters that owe rent for the April 2020 – June 2021 period cannot:
- evict renters for rent owed for this period (until March 1, 2022)
- charge fees for unpaid rent for this period, and
- report renters for past due rent to a consumer credit reporting agency.
Unpaid rent from April 2020 – March 2022 cannot count against renters in future rental applications. (Oregon law SB 282)
